Oceania Oracle {Excerpts}
From Jim Davidson:

Oceania Oracle #19 - 01/14/95

Richard Morris and I have had several conversations on the subject of his company, Sea Structures Inc.

Why Sea Structures? Morris has several patents pending on amazing technologies that allow him to create very low cost platforms for sea structures. His ingenious designs permit the creation of 1/4 acre of "land" for around $62,000. Check the listings near you, but that is very impressive for water-front property. Check out a book called The Millennial Project (on the Oceania Mall) for more info on what can be done with the ocean to make money (tourism, ocean thermal energy conversion, mariculture, extracting magnesium from sea water, accreting concrete from sea water, culturing spirulina for beta carotene and other prime extracts, etc.), but right now think about ways to make money creating low cost structures for the ocean's surface.

We need some information on key subjects:

  1. How large is the industry? Annual sales for the last 5 years.
  2. What are the major materials used by other sea platform manufacturers?
  3. Who are the major players in the industry? How large are they by sales, employees, annual profits?
  4. Where are these players located?
  5. Who are the major customers presently? (Oil & gas exploration firms, travel resort firms, marine cargo firms, etc)
  6. Who has expressed interest recently (magazine articles, newspaper articles, etc.)?
What's in it for you? First, there's the prospect of starting a new country with a sensible level of government. If you believe the Republicans are going to rewrite America, go for it. If you are skeptical, give us a hand with the research. Second, there is the prospect of getting a new business started and growing. That means there will be jobs for a few key people. If you do much research and know your stuff about the industry, you might be planned into the company from the start.

Where are we going from here? With answers (good or bad) to the above questions, we'll have a good start on some major holes in the business plan. We should have a draft by 1 March. That means we should be contacting investors to raise the $200K needed by late March. With luck, good contacts, and a solid plan, we should be able to raise that in 4 to 6 months.

Finally, who the hell am I? I'm Jim Davidson, author of the Atlantis Papers, managing editor of Visions of the Future, President of the Houston Space Institute, BA History Columbia '85, MBA Marketing Rice '87, and one of only two Americans ever arrested for operating a space tourism company. Also, all around bon vivant. While you're researching, check out Time, 28 December 1990, page 17.

Thanks for your help.

Jim
